Union Soldier's Letter Home, 1863
William S. Marston, a soldier from New Hampshire, wrote a note to his mother in the margins of this issue of The New South, a newspaper in Port Royal, S.C. Marston's Union regiment was stationed nearby. Across the top he began: "Mother, I think you will be as well pleased to have me send you a New South and write on the margin that I am well, as you would be to have me write a long letter."
