'Press on the Field' Illustration, 1864
This Harper's Weekly illustration, titled "The Press on the Field," depicts the daily work of Civil War correspondents, which might include interviewing "contrabands" — escaped slaves who sought refuge within the Union. Civil War reporters faced many of the same hardships as soldiers. This issue of Harper's Weekly calls them the "Newspaper Brigade."
