Vicksburg Victory Map, July 8, 1863
Located on bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River, Vicksburg, Miss., was a city of strategic importance. Vicksburg fell about six weeks after Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's Union Army surrounded the city, blocking supply routes. News of the surrender traveled by telegraph to Washington, D.C., then on to Philadelphia.
